Southwest Health System Named on Becker’s List of 100 Great Community Hospitals

View full list here

Southwest Health System (Cortez, Colo.). Southwest Health System is a critical access hospital that has built its success on three strategic pillars, including physician recruitment, financial sustainability and operational efficiency. The organization’s physician recruitment approach replaces routine facility tours with multi-day visits in which prospective medical professionals and their families meet potential colleagues, connect with local residents who share similar interests, and interact with school leaders. This strategy has yielded 17 accepted physician offers out of 18 extended. On the financial front, the hospital’s CEO demonstrated strategic resource management by renegotiating a leaking roof repair that initially bid above $1.5 million, completing the work for approximately $600,000 through partnerships with Community Hospital Corporation and Health Trust Performance Group and immediately reallocating the savings to patient care. The hospital also stabilized its financial position by building lender trust through transparent financial planning, prompting creditors to adjust bond covenant terms to grant the hospital greater flexibility. For operational efficiency, the community hospital leverages partnership expertise for critical processes such as charge master reviews and month-end financial reporting, allowing it to manage specialized functions without the cost of full-time in-house staff. The hospital’s leadership team has been a vocal public advocate on rural health policy, warning that proposed Medicaid cuts and challenges to nonprofit tax status could threaten the hospital with losses in the millions, and arguing that the community benefits provided by nonprofit rural hospitals, including charity care, emergency services and mental health programs, far outweigh the cost of their tax exemptions.
